Carbon Footprint Plan

A carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by an organisation, product, or individual. In the healthcare sector, these emissions are significant—globally, healthcare is responsible for about 4% of all greenhouse gas emissions, making it a key area for climate action. As a supplier to hospitals, including the NHS, we recognise the crucial role we play in supporting the sector's sustainability goals. The NHS has set ambitious net zero targets, and we are committed to doing our part to help achieve them. By measuring, reporting, and actively working to reduce our carbon footprint, we contribute to a healthier environment and support our customers in meeting their climate commitments.

Commitments

We are dedicated to reducing our environmental impact and supporting the healthcare sector's journey to net zero. As part of this commitment, we have publicly pledged through the SME Climate Hub, aligning ourselves with globally recognised standards for climate responsibility.

Our Net Zero Commitments:

1. Halve our greenhouse gas emissions before 2030
2. Achieve net zero emissions before 2050 across Scope 1, Scope 2, and the following Scope 3 categories:
• Upstream transportation and distribution
• Waste generated in operations
• Business travel
• Downstream transportation and distribution
• Employee travel
3. Disclose our progress on a yearly basis

Baseline Emissions

To guide our climate action and track progress, we established our baseline carbon footprint for the 2022/23 financial year. This assessment follows the internationally recognised Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and covers all three emission scopes: direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2), and other indirect emissions across our value chain (Scope 3).

Methodology

Our calculations used a combination of actual data (utility bills, travel records, supplier information) and industry-standard emission factors from sources such as BEIS (UK), DEFRA (UK), EPA (USA), and Exiobase (EU). Where precise data was unavailable, we used reasonable estimates and documented our assumptions.

Carbon Reduction Measures / Action Plan

To support our commitment to halve our greenhouse gas emissions before 2030 and achieve Net Zero before 2050, we will focus on the following areas:

Governance, Responsibility and Monitoring

Our Carbon Reduction Plan is overseen by the Managing Director, who is responsible for ensuring that our emissions reduction commitments are integrated into our business activities and reviewed regularly. Our carbon footprint is measured annually using the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. We monitor progress against our emissions reduction commitments and review our carbon reduction measures to identify opportunities for further improvement. Progress, emissions data and the effectiveness of our reduction measures are reviewed annually, and our Carbon Reduction Plan will be updated as necessary to reflect our progress, changes in our business and new opportunities for emissions reduction.
